Mirages.
In our drive to Salisbury on Saturday, April 27, 2002, we noticed many road mirages.
The day started out as clear sky and in the low 70's. As we reached Easton the very long stretches of flat and straight Route 50 produced many continuous water-on-road mirages at distances of about 700 - 1300 feet in front of us. Oncoming traffic showed multiple reflections of headlights on the roadway mirages.
We were in this region at about 1:30 PM with sky conditions still mostly clear but beginning to get rich with cumulus clouds. By 3-4 PM on the drive back, the mirages were far less spectacular probably because of the overcast sky and the lessening of the road-atmosphere temperature gradients.
I will probably return to this area once conditions improve, to reobserve the mirages under conditions closer to the time of the 1952 sightings. I'm just curious how much more dramatic these mirages can become.
