What can you tell me about Comet Arend-Roland?

Comet Arend-Roland, also called 1956h and 1957 III, was a splendid naked-eye comet seen in the northwest sky between April and May, 1957. The many photographs of it show the rare 'anti-tail spike' extending as much as 4 degrees ahead of the comet's nucleus. A collection of some 24 photographs of it can be found in Sky and Telescope magazine for July, 1957, and more discussions of this comet can also be found in the June, 1957 issue, page 364.

For general information about this comet in printed form, this magazine offers a good background on the observations and unusual physical properties. You should also visit one of the many excellent websites such as Gary Kronk's comet page and the links he provides to other comet sites. This is a sufficiently spectacular comet that just about any book on astronomy and the solar system is likely to have a photograph of it.
