Was anything peculiar seen in the tail of Comet Hyakutake?

Yes. Many jets were observed radiating from the nucleus. For example, these two images of C/1996 B2 Hyakutake were taken under similar observing conditions with the 1-meter telescope at Pic du Midi in France. A transitory outburst is clearly visible on April 15.85

For a complete chronology of this comet, including photographs at various stages in its development, have a look at the JPL Hyakutake page. It includes many descriptions of this comet and the development of structure in its tail.
