How did the Earth get its name?

Of course, 'earth' is the name that appears for it in the english language. In swedish it is 'jorden', in spanish it is 'tierra'. The Oxford English Dictionary notes that 'earth' is derived from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. It's germanic equivalent is 'erde'. Clearly, the modern English name goes back over 1000 years.
