This is a hard question for online information. There used to be a course on celestial navigation at Harvard University. I also thought that the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland, and the U>S. Naval Observatory might have such information but I couldn't find anything there. I searched with InfoSeek under Stars navigation and found a neat website with some very nice software for celestial navigation. The problem is that the Navy now uses the Global Positioning System and no longer carries traditional information on using stars in any of the resources I have visited. Alas, it is now another quaint subject like 'How to build a Viking ship'.
