The specific report was that the object gave an orange glow, and streaked across the southern sky about 35 degrees above the horizon.
There are no meteor showers of consequence in February, and based on its low elevation in the southern sky, I would be inclined to say that it was either a 'sporadic bolide' or perhaps a piece of 'space junk'. I think the former possibility is more likely. Bolides are very spectacular and the chances are good that you will see several of these in your lifetime if you look at the sky with reasonable frequency, especially during times when meteor showers are expected.
