How many supernova have been found so far?

Between 1958 and 1975 the Palomar Supernova Search program photographed 3000 galaxies in clusters every moonless night and found 281 supernova. A search of the IAU daily discovery reports shows that in 1996 there were 80 supernovae discovered in other galaxies. 18 of these were discovered by the High-Z Supernova Program alone. The most recent IAU Circular I could find showed that on February 7, 1997 Supernova 1997Z in the galaxy NGC 3261 had been discovered making it the 26th supernova this year alone.
