There is no 'normal' altitude really. Satellites used for research can have orbits from a few hundred miles to 10,000s of thousands of miles. Communication satellites are always found in the 'Clarke Belt' in geosynchronous orbit at an altitiude of 45,000 kilometers. It all depends on what the satellite's purpose is.
