When did living matter first become aware of itself?

Impossible to tell. I have heard it said that even bacteria have a simple notion of themselves in relation to their surroundings. They are the 'things that are hungry' and everything else is 'food' or 'possible food'. This is a rudimentary concept of 'self' if you ask me!
