Why can't we see infinitely far into space ?

Because the universe has only been around for 10 - 15 billion years and so the farthest distance light could travel since then is 10 - 15 billion light years. As the universe ages, we will see light from more and more distant regions which are now not visible to us because the light is still on the way here!
