It sounds rather curious, but my first reaction is that it might have been high flying military jets. This could not be confirmed without a detailed flight log of overflights by military aircraft. I note, however, that one of my readers in New England reported seeing a triangular object flying in the sky with colored lights. It was only after watching the local news that she discovered it was a military aircraft visiting the area as a training exercise.
