"A very large fiery ball and tail just appeared, streaked across the sky from horizon to horizon and fizzled out a few thousand feet up".
This sounds like a bolide or 'fireball'. They are rare, but with 200 million people in North America, someone is bound to see one nearly every year, but any one individual just looking at the sky casually, will see only one a lifetime!
