How long have quasars been around?

There are no quasars in the present universe. There are LOTS of very active galaxies, but none as luminous as a true quasar. We believe the quasars are a physical phenomenon that some galaxies passed through when they were very young during the first 5 - 10 billion years after the Big Bang. We think this also has something to do with the creation and feeding of massive black holes in the cores of some galaxies. Today, there are still many of these 'supermassive' black holes in existence, but they are not being fed as mush as they once were, and so all we now have are 'active galactic nuclei' which emit energy at 1 percent or so of the more ancient 'quasar' luminosity. MAny of these nearby galaxies may have been quasars once, but now they are not presently active.
