From Pennsylvania on 10/20/1996 I saw what looked like a star flare up at 5 AM about 50 degrees from the southern horizon. What do you suppose it was?

From the information you gave, the sighting must have been somewhere in the direction of the constellation Taurus or Auriga, but without any more specific information about the particular sky region you were looking at, I am afraid what you are describing sounds more like a man-made object, or perhaps even a rare meteor streaking towards you and burning up to make a tailless fireball. There are no reports of any stars flairing up like that.
