Can you say anything about the largest sunspots seen in 1840?

Well., not much. This year was 2.8 years after the sunspot maximum year 1837.2 where 146.9 spots were detected ( data from Allen's 'Astrophysical Quantities' page 182, The Athalone Press, 3rd edition. ). You can visit the NOAA Sunspot Page and get more information, but as for details about what the spots looked like, I don't know of a good resource that shows sketches. Photography was not invented yet!
