What was the bright dancing light seen in the north from Edinburgh during the last two summers?

It is almost impossible to identify any object from such a description without knowing its exact date, elevation and azimuth, time of day. This helps eliminate aurorae, missile launches, and other 'mundane' possibilities. Generally, astronomical objects do not 'dance' in the sky.
