Why do you believe 'spook lights' are real but not that UFOs are spacecraft?

In a previous question I mentioned that there have been numerous reports of odd lights in some parts of the United States. I am very sympathetic to these observations because it was essentially the very same kinds of persistent reports that led to the eventual detailed investigation of Ball Lightning. Despite their colorful name, spooklights are intriguing, and if I do say so, a bit thrilling to study. The reason for me is that there is much about them that one would think ought to be discoverable if only someone would take the time and be persistent. I can think of a dozen experiments I would like to attempt, to learn more about them. But until someone or some group comes forward to do such a study, I am perfectly willing to leave them alone and just enjoy the element of mystery that they introduce into my world.

I have seen UFOs; that is to say, I have seen one or two aerial phenomena in my lifetime to date that I could not successfully interpret in terms of any obvious phenomena. I also enjoy having them a part of my collage of natural mysteries about the world. I do not feel compelled by any physical evidence I have seen to conclude that some of these are alien spacecraft. I agree with Carl Sagan. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. A million anecdotes do not add up to the same weight as 10 grams of alien metal, and every psychologist and lawyer will tell you that humans are about the worst 'eye witnesses' you could possible want to prove a case one way or the other. There are too many hidden agendas that we all have, consciously or unconsciously; and everything we see is filtered through this tangle.

As for spooklights, singing sand and mistpouffers: I have no opinion on these matters; I cannot explain them scientifically; I have no time to think about them in any detail; but I am delighted that I might share this increasingly small planet with them!
