
There are 88 constellations recognized. My favorite one is Orion (above). Before 1928, however, only about 50 were officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Some of these, like Antinous and Robur Carolinum no longer exist. Richard Dibon-Smith has an excellent Annotated Index. You can also look at Chris Dolan's Costellation List and information page.
