Is it really scary up in space?

I can't think of anything more terrifying. The only thing that separates you from instant death is a 5-inch or so bulkhead of metal that can be EASILY penetrated by meteoroids and orbiting debris. In a space suit it is even more precarious.

Extended journeys to the Moon or Mars must be equally unsettling and the Apollo 13 accident, and the MIR space station mishap with the Progress supply vehicle in June 1997, shows just how thin the edge can be between survival and death only a few hundred miles from the earth.
