Are we really alone in the universe?

It is absolutely inconceivable to me that there isn't LOTS of life out there, at least in the form of bacteria. Now, as for intelligent life, that's going to have to be a lot more rare to find than bacteria. Just looking at the Earth and how much time the biosphere was 'dumb and non-technological' I would be willing to guess that for every 1000 planets with bacteria, we would find 100 with multicellular life, and only 1 with anything like intelligent life. But then again, we just do not know!! But the Milky Way and the Universe are BIG, and I have little doubt that there are lots of intelligent, and even space-faring, life forms out there.
