Was Venus named Lucifer after the Devil, or was the Devil named after Venus?
From what I can tell, Lucifer is the ancient Greek name of Venus the Morning Star, but I know nothing about the history of when it was first used in translations of the Bible to refer to Satan. It seems that the Greeks were using Lucifer, together with Persephone, to identify Venus long before the name was used to represent Satan.
It is an unfortunate choice because Lucifer literally means 'filled with light' which is hardly a moniker for Satan as the Bible has described the Prince of Darkness.
