Sten Odenwald's diary of the Transit of Venus 2004 at the Astronomy Cafe
Thursday June 10 – Returning Home
Today will be a full day of travel. By the clock, I will leave Athens at Noon and arrive in Baltimore at 6:30 PM, though the afternoon trip will hide another seven hours of time zone changes during the 10-hour flight. I will hail a Taxi in the central square a few blocks away, and for 25 Euros take it to the airport – to aerodromio (to a e ro THRO mee o). I look forward to looking like a complete idiot shouting my one word in Greek. Perhaps I will use the name of the airport instead to make sure I am really taken to the right one! El Venizelos which is on the new highway Atiki Odo. I imagine the Customs and Passport checks will be careful, though with only E-tickets I am not at all sure how smoothly the ticketing process will be. Because former President Ronald Regan died this week and will be buried in Arlington Cemetery on Friday, Friday is now a federal holiday and the last day of school at the Kensington Holy Redeemer School will be today! Also, travel is expected to be murderous as 200,000 people try to get here from elsewhere.
